“Congressional Record, Volume 171 Issue 195 (Wednesday, November 19, 2025) [Congressional Record Volume 171, Number 195 (Wednesday, November 19, 2025)] [Extensions of Remarks] [Page E1102] From the Congressional Record Online through the Government Publishing Office [ www.gpo.gov ] HONORING AKBAR T. SALAAM FOR HIS EXCEPTIONAL SERVICE TO NEWARK AND NEW JERSEY _____ HON. LaMONICA McIVER of new jersey in the house of representatives Wednesday, November 19, 2025 Mrs. McIVER. Mr. Speaker, I rise today to celebrate Akbar T. Salaam, a distinguished entrepreneur, statesman, and community leader whose decades of service have made an extraordinary impact on the people of Newark and the broader New Jersey community. For more than 58 years, Mr. Salaam has owned and operated the Unity Brand Halal Beef Sausage Company, a landmark institution in Newark that he has used not only as a business, but as a vehicle for social service and opportunity. He has partnered with Volunteers of America to support inmates returning to society, offering employment, skills training, and community service opportunities that help them rebuild their lives. He has also invested deeply in Newark's youth, providing high school students with job training and career mentoring to prepare them for the future. His tireless work has earned numerous honors, including induction into the Malcolm X Shabazz High School Alumni Hall of Fame (2014), multiple ``Businessman of the Year'' awards, and the Excellence in Business and Community Service Award from the New Jersey Senate, Assembly, and Newark Municipal Council (2018). Now, therefore, be it resolved that the Congress honors Akbar T. Salaam for his remarkable contributions to the community, his unwavering commitment to social justice, and his significant impact on the Halal industry. I congratulate Mr. Salaam. He makes New Jersey proud. ____________________”

“Congressional Record, Volume 171 Issue 153 (Thursday, September 18, 2025) [Congressional Record Volume 171, Number 153 (Thursday, September 18, 2025)] [Extensions of Remarks] [Page E876] From the Congressional Record Online through the Government Publishing Office [ www.gpo.gov ] RECOGNIZING THE VISIT OF ECUMENICAL PATRIARCH BARTHOLOMEW ______ HON. LaMONICA McIVER of new jersey in the house of representatives Thursday, September 18, 2025 Mrs. McIVER. Mr. Speaker, I rise today to extend a warm welcome to His All-Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, an esteemed leader of the Eastern Orthodox Church, upon his visit to the United States. For more than three decades, Patriarch Bartholomew has stood as a moral voice in times of global challenge. When Europe faced the refugee crisis, he joined hands with Pope Francis to affirm the dignity and humanity of those fleeing Syria, Africa, and beyond in search of safety and a better life. In an increasingly divided world, he has worked tirelessly to build bridges--fostering interfaith dialogue among Christians, Jews, Muslims, and people of all faith traditions. As the global climate crisis deepens, he has reminded us that creation itself is a sacred trust, urging us to honor and protect the natural world with which God has blessed us. For this leadership, he is being awarded the prestigious Templeton Prize during his visit. Patriarch Bartholomew's spiritual guidance has inspired Orthodox Christians across the globe. In my own district, he has been a shepherd to the congregation of St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church in Union, New Jersey. Under his leadership, the St. Demetrios community has flourished as an example of faith in action--welcoming neighbors from every walk of life to their Annual Greek Cultural Festival and offering vital community services year-round. It is therefore my great honor to join my constituents and colleagues in welcoming His All-Holiness, Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, to our Nation. We are confident that his visit will be both meaningful and successful. ____________________”

“Congressional Record, Volume 171 Issue 145 (Thursday, September 4, 2025) [Congressional Record Volume 171, Number 145 (Thursday, September 4, 2025)] [Extensions of Remarks] [Page E813] From the Congressional Record Online through the Government Publishing Office [ www.gpo.gov ] HONORING THE INVESTITURE OF PRESIDENT ANDRES ACEBO, J.D. ______ HON. LaMONICA McIVER of new jersey in the house of representatives Thursday, September 4, 2025 Mrs. McIVER. Mr. Speaker, I rise today to celebrate Andres Acebo, J.D., as the 13th President of New Jersey City University, located in the 10th Congressional District of New Jersey. As the youngest-ever president appointed to a public university in New Jersey, Acebo has made remarkable advancements during his interim presidency. His innovative approach and commitment to excellence have significantly enhanced the university's impact on the local community and its academic standing. In just two years, Acebo turned NJCU's $22.7 million deficit into financial stability, achieving its first balanced budget since 2017. His efforts led to significant credit rating upgrades from Moody's and Fitch, and he was named the top influencer in New Jersey higher education by ROI-NJ in May 2024. Beyond financial accomplishments, Acebo's leadership has propelled NJCU to remarkable heights in social mobility, as the university ranked No. 1 in New Jersey and 10th nationally in CollegeNET's 2023 Social Mobility Index, maintaining that top state ranking and a position in the Top 20 nationally in 2024. This commitment to student success is further reflected in the graduation rates, with 1,667 students earning their degrees in Spring 2024, an impressive 8.2 percent increase in bachelor's degrees from the previous year and an additional 1,544 graduates projected for 2025. He established partnerships with peer institutions, connecting schools that share similar values and agreements, which fostered a larger higher education community. Under Acebo's leadership, NJCU's athletics also benefited positively as he transitioned the program to a new conference with CUNYAC members in 2026. What an incredible accomplishment and a shining example of New Jersey excellence. I congratulate Andres. He makes New Jersey proud. ____________________”
